The Enclave at Cinnamon Reef

[Click to enlarge] It is now "The Enclave at Cinnamon Reef". This intimate retreat now under the Boutique Resorts properties had undergone major renovations and refurbishments over the past months. The rooms were completely redone with plantation style furnishings and fixtures, Ralph Lauren bedding, new mattresses and the addition of TVs and air conditioners to every room. The lobby/ concierge area is very inviting with plush, comfortable furniturehaving an ambience similar to the foyer of a private estate.

The ownership indicate that their aim is to offer world class, top-notch service and amenities at a great value. They have started their season off with a generous half price offer for the months of February and March 2002.

Hemingway's restaurant (formerly the Palm Court) has been redone and now allows for waterfront dining for all guests. The views are spectacularfrom boats in the natural cove, to the nearby ridge dotted with lovely villas to the island of St. Martin spanning the horizon. The "Around the World" menu features dishes from destinations like Havana, Kenya, Key West, Italy and more. A lobster pool is also a new interesting feature in the restaurant.

For casual dining you can try Hemingway's Bar and Grill located adjacent to the restaurant. The menu features Lobster Quesadillas ($14), Buffalo style chicken wings ($8), Mexican Chicken Wrap ($11), Cheeseburger served with spicy fries ($9.50) and more.

The beach is secluded and quiet and guests have unlimited complimentary use of watersports. For more information call 264-497-2727 or 1-8000-223-1108 or visit www.boutiqueresortsintl.com

Agricultural Fair

[Click to enlarge] "Farm Today or Starve Tomorrow."

In Every Home A Garden

This year's Agricultural and Agro Industrial Exhibition held in February was quite a success! The Agricultural Department's grounds in The Valley literally came alive with many animals from the indigenous goats and chickens to various imported birds and monkeys who came in especially for the event. There was a wide variety of plants and agro produce available for display and sale. There were even visiting participants from Nevis.displaying locally made liqueurs and agro produce.

The highlight of the displays was a life-size traditional Caribbean wooden house painted in pastel shades complete with a model backyard garden. The house was so well crafted and decorated (curtains and all!) that you would think it was a lived-in home. The interior of the house was used to display various Anguillian agro products and traditional house hold items from the days gone by. Growing in the backyard garden were various vegetables and local herbs in neat banks. A spouting fountain the garden added a decorative touch.

The many school children that came on field trips and the general public had a real educational treat. The hard work and planning involved in executing this event was mammoth. Congratulations go out to Director of Agriculture William Vanterpool and his team along with the participating farmers and producers for a job well done!

[Click to enlarge] [Click to enlarge] [Click to enlarge] [Click to enlarge]

Director - William Vanterpool: "The Department, in its drive to reactivate the agricultural sector, is also focusing on the younger generation and their adoption of farming as a profitable business. With all the new technology available such as drip irrigation and hydroponics, farming can be less labour intensive and much more rewarding. As we focus on our mission of import substitution, food security and the enhancement of the contribution agriculture makes to the economy, we look forward to the continued support of the entire community in moving agriculture to even higher levels."

February Cultural Festival.

The tourist board announces that the official Programme for Anguillas 10th Annual Cultural Education Festival has been released. The week-long festival, which will run from February 17th to 24th, 2002, is being held under the theme String & Sea Rhythms of Tranquility, with the focus being on String Band music and a number of sea related activities.

The Official programme commences with a Church Service at St. Andrews Anglican Church at Island Harbour on Sunday February 17th and a String Band Fiesta at Shoal Bay East in the afternoon.

Monday February 18th, will see the opening of an Exhibition at the Anguilla Public Library, and the commencement of Anguillas first ever Model Boat workshop. Mr. Louvan Webster of Island Harbour and Mr. John Rogers, (an Anguillian, living in New York) will conduct the workshop, which will include all seven primary schools and the ALCHS. Boat racing enthusiasts from across the island have also been invited to adopt a school - preferably from their own village - and to assist in the production of these Model Boats. The workshop will climax with a grand Model Boat race in Island Harbour on Sunday February 24.

Other school related events will feature an ALHCS String Band and Cultural Cuisine event, several media programmes focussing on this years theme and the Annual Primary Schools Choral Speaking Evening.

A new feature in this years program is the inclusion of the Festival del Mar as part of the weeks proceedings. This 3-day mini-festival was created by the Anguilla Tourist Board, and is seen as an effective vehicle for celebrating this vital aspect of our cultural heritage, while at the same time enriching the entertainment experience for our visitors and locals alike. Highlights of the Festival del Mar include a special cultural event organized by the West End Community in tribute to the late John Cousin Waddy Hodge; a Quincina Celebration at Sandy Ground; and a Model Boat Race and other activities at Island Harbour on the last day of the Festival.

The Anguilla Cultural and Educational Festival looks forward to the participation of all residents and visitors of Anguilla in making this celebration of String and Sea an exciting, entertaining, yet educational experience.
