The Old Manse

Well, that is the "old manse" building of the Methodist church, and it isn't derelict anymore.

While searching for a a better location for her realty business, Lindy Tamn realized the possible potential of this wonderful old building and brought it to the attention of a local contractor, Luke Thomas. Luke assessed the damages and agreed that, after much work, the building indeed could be brought back to have a charming new life.

The work began for Mr. Thomas with negotiations with The Methodist Church for a lease and the work followed fairly quickly. Within approximately 6 months, the Grand Opening took place on November 17, 2000. The Old Manse building is fully occupied by 6 diverse and complementary businesses.

ATMs on Anguilla. Paul Lowerre (paul.lowerre@painewebber.com) writes:

Hello: I returned from Anguilla yesterday and I had to come up with some US dollars for tips and exit fees (I am a "non-belonger"). I tried the CCB and Anguilla National cash machines to no avail. Then I found the Scotiabank ATM in a mall in The Valley. This ATM is hooked into the PLUS system and is good for VISA and MASTERCARD and others. Maximum withdrawal is US$ 600 (better than at home). Best regards, Pual Lowerre.
Good news - 3 years ago we didn't have any cash machines. Now there are several ATMs and at least one is usually working!

Anguilla Questions?
Email the Tourist Board at [email protected] or the Hotel Association at [email protected]

Import Duties in Anguilla for Tourists? Steve Tonini asks a question that I don't know the answer to.

My wife and I are avid windsurfers/kitesurfers, and will be bringing our own equipment to Anguilla.

Someone mentioned to me that Customs charges for bringing in sporting equipment. Now, I hope this is not the case because I don't see the point in it if we do not plan on selling the equipment (which we will not). Nevertheless, do you have any indication if this is true? Is it a deposit that is paid to customs which is then reimbursed upon departure with the goods? Or, and I truly hope this is not the case, is a non-reimbursable fee charged? Do you know if they charge a percentage based on the value of new?

Thanks for the help - your website gave me the indication to send you this note, since I assumed you must know quite a bit on the ins and outs of Anguilla!

Steve

Dandy Richardson used to have windsurfers to rent on Shoal Bay, but he has gone to the USA to get married. So that limits the choices on the island. If anyone knows the answer, email it to Steve and to bgreen@news.ai

Answer on Xmas Music.
Internet Yellow Pages:
All known Anguilla sites.

Recently we posted a visitor question about the Christmas song "How Will Santa Get Here". Roger Fenn (email: [email protected]) sent an answer:

Last year we were on Anguilla for Christmas and really liked "How will Santa Get Here" so we bought a CD with it and many other neat holiday songs. Unfortunately, unless you're in the Caribbean or a really big metropolitan area, you probably won't be able to buy it state-side. It's Caribbean vocalist named King Obstinate on the CD "A Christmas Blessing" from Antigua on Greenbay Records GS 0002: check online www.theorchard.com (search artist: King Obstinate) also distributed in the US by both VP records, Jamaica NY 718 291 7058 and JW Records, Brooklyn, NY 718 693 9261.

A couple of other good CD's for the Holidays are Ruff & Reddy from Dominica on their CD "Sunshine Christmas" and "Caribbean Christmas St. Maartin" (HNM002) produced by Deniscio "simply the best" Brooks for Heineken Music recorded on St. Maartin. We found these at the Anguilla Drug Store in The Valley and at the Record Shop just a couple of doors down the road.

Visitor Feedback. Pam Livingston (email: [email protected]) writes:
We love getting your Anguilla news, it is a great source for us to keep in touch with what is going on.

We just returned from the Island on Nov. 10th and are already planning our next trip. We love the Island and the people. This past trip we stayed at Frangipani Beach Club and truly enjoyed it. The grounds and staff were the best. The room we had was immaculate, tons of space with full kitchen and living area, large bedroom, 2 baths and right on the beach. What a luxury to listen to the roar of the waves every night. We will definitely return to Frangipani and highly recommend it.

We also enjoyed dinner at Blanchards, the Pump House (favorite for pizza and burgers), Olivers, Roy's Place, La Sirena and Trattoria Tramonto. I have just ordered the Blanchards book on line and am looking forward to reading it.

We cannot say enough about Anguilla to our friends. I can truly understand why people come again and again. I am throwing away all my travel books because there is no where else I wish to travel. Besides there is no better place to see such beautiful beaches!!!

Happy Holidays to all.
