New Book on Anguilla

Janine Edwards writes: "There is a lovely new Anguilla hardcover book entitled Anguilla A Shorter Sleeved Way of Life by TH Patten. The visuals are great and I havent had a chance to read it yet! ISBN 0-9762839-0-5. Published by Elizabooks Publishing (link above)."

Anne Parle writes: "The book has been available on Island for just two short weeks and has been very well received. The book is currently available at the Something Special, Irie Life, Anguilla Drugstore, Straw Hat Restaurant and the Overlook and at the Tourist Board office (the publisher has generously donated 3 cases so that Mimi can do a fundraiser for the AHTA and the Anguilla Culinary Team) ... the book normally retails for US$35."

Heidi Meyer writes: "Liz Tiefenthaler, a long-time visitor of Anguilla, recently published a lovely new book on Anguilla, entitled Anguilla, A Shorter Sleeved Way of Life. A summary of this new book is as follows:" 'Join a well-meaning but hapless vacationer on a trip to an island of breathtaking beaches, rich history, and sumptuous resorts and restaurants. Anguilla, a Shorter Sleeved Way of Life covers the wanderings, discoveries and perceptions of a first-time visitor to the island. Extraordinarily rich in photographs and incidents, goats and toasts, palms and fronds, this book is one part guidebook, one part travelogue, and quite a few parts fuzzy recollection. It is available for purchase at elizabookspublishing.com.'

Steve Stanczyk writes: "Attached is a pdf of the sell sheet and cover of Anguilla, A Shorter Sleeved Way of Life."

Golf Fun Saturday

Anguilla has a 9-hole pitch and putt course in Sandy Ground where you can practice your short game in anticipation of the upcoming St Regis resort course (and any other golf courses that might be built in Anguilla in the future). The first Golf "Scramble" of 2005 will be held Saturday, 22 January at the Pitch and Putt course in Sandy Ground. Register 3 PM so teams can be organized and tournament commenced with a "shot-gun" start 3:30. Entry fee EC$10.00, or US$4.00. Clubs available for rent. In a Scramble, each group starts on a different hole and plays 9 holes. After each shot, your team selects the best shot of your team and everyone hits from that spot. This is great - it means that lost balls into the bush never happened (unless all 4 of your hit into the bush)! There will be a social hour following golf when winners will be announced and prizes awarded. The first two scrambles in Nov and Dec were a big success.

Newspaper Article on Anguilla

The Philadelphia Inquirer of Dec 5, 2004 had an article entitled "Enchantment on horseback, swimming in a tropical sea" by Donna Gentile O'Donnell. Here is a sample:

"I met Tonia at the stable for an early-morning ride. We saddled up the horses, rode the cliffside that overlooks the ocean, and picked our way down the steep, rocky hillside toward the beach at Road Bay. There were three contiguous stretches of dazzling white beach, with some human obstacles in between, mostly boat lines mooring sailboats in the town harbor, and little kids darting in and out of the water.

When we got to the first open stretch, I gave Tequila a little squeeze with my legs. That was all the encouragement he needed. He was off like a shot, into a full, smooth, exhilarating gallop. After we sprinted the length of the beaches, Tonia asked me if I wanted to take them into the water.

Now, I've been in water before on horseback. So at first, I didn't get the import of what she was asking. As we waded in, I soon realized that the horses were not just headed in up to their knees to cool off. Within seconds, the sea covered their withers - they were almost completely submerged, and I was up to my waist in water. The horses were swimming, and making noises that approximated sounds I've heard dolphins and whales make; these were deep-throated exhales, clearly communicating pleasure...."
