At this event there will be participation by the children who attend the Sunset Homes –Roaring Lions Youth Training Program held each Saturday. (Some fifty plus children are currently registered in this program). The children will be present to officially view and participate in various supporting activities at the event, in an effort to offer them exposure to a regional football tournament. This event should serve to stimulate increased interest and appreciation for the game among the youth and the community in general and will also promote intra-regional ties and sports tourism.

Kind sponsorship for this event in the estimated amount of US$13,500 is provided by Sunset Homes, Greig’s Trucking, Little Harbour Estates and Windrift Villas. Appreciation is extended to the Anguilla Football Association, The Department of Sports, assisting local football teams and the volunteers.

The New Barrel Stay

Carole Harman writes:

"My partner and I have just returned from our 8th trip to Anquilla...while we love the clear air, the awesome sunshine, the aquamarine water, the white sand and, the people who also stay at Blue Waters....we are delighted with the choices of food that Anquilla has to offer...

"This year, and hopefully for many years to come, we were enthralled with the NEW Barrel Stay on Sandy Ground!!!!! The food of chef Graham Belcher is better than first class! The meals we had were the best of our vacation...the conch salad appetizer with that unique and of course, delicious dressing, was the beginning of my two dinners...the two entrees were sublime as well, perfectly prepared beef tenderloin medallion topped with foie gras, served with julienne veggies and native rice...I can taste it as I'm writing! On our second visit, I ordered the duck breast a la orange...oh! my! God!...it was the best I have ever had...cooked rare with a divine sauce and a potato cake, crisp on the out side and perfection on the inside...I was a bit worried about room for dessert... I had to have room for dessert! And I did! On our first visit, we shared one of the best crème brulees...accompanied by a tall butter cookie holding vanilla ice cream and a spun sugar topper. On our second visit, our dessert was the Tart Tatin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perfectly cooked with a small but, not too small, scoop of vanilla ice cream and an excellent crème anglais covering the platter, just enough for two to share but I must confess, I ate more than my "half" and I needed a soup spoon to get ALL of the crème anglais...I just couldn't help myself! The coffee is made at your table in a glass press pot and is very rich in flavor. Although we did not have wine with our dinner, the restaurant offers an extensive list.

"Now...let me tell you about Jill Shepherd who is by no means an afterthought! Jill is married to Graham. Jill is in charge of the "front of the house" which she does with great aplomb... she is knowledgeable about all aspects of the restaurant business and is clearly enthusiastic about their move to Anquilla... One of our friends,a dinner companion on our first visit to the restaurant, said that Jill "looks like a mermaid that walks the earth..." Jill is a beautiful woman with a great sense of humor and a great love and respect for the "man behind the stove"...I feel like I've known her for years...

"We look forward to out next trip to Anquilla as always but, now we will also look forward to our next meal at Barrel Stay...Try it , you won't be disappointed!

[Editor Note: we have eaten there several times since the new team took over and have never been disappointed. I snapped the picture above during one of those meals.]

Ring Around the Sun

Steve Donahue writes:

"For those of you who missed it, here is a picture of a halo that appeared around the sun at noontime on Tuesday, 19 April here in Anguilla. That's a large spoon you see blocking the sun itself so the shot wouldn't be overexposed. Some of the reasons I've heard for the halo:

I think I'd go with dust from Montserrat."

Thanks for the picture Steve. A little research with Google shows another explanation from a NASA web site:

... thin cirrus clouds plus bright sunlight almost guaranteed seeing something wonderful. Cirrus clouds are made of millions of hexagonal ice crystals 3 to 6 miles up in the troposphere where jet airplanes fly--each crystal acting as a tiny prism refracting (bending) the sun's light and throwing it elsewhere into the sky.
Here is another photograph of a ring around the sun.

Mimi Graton of the AHTA writes: " The AHTA received a communiqué today from HE The Governor, Alan Huckle, alerting to a report from the UK Embassy in Washington on the announcement from the United States Administration that, as of 31 December 2005, anyone (including US citizens) traveling to and from the Caribbean and Bermuda will require passports to enter the US. Gray Updates Hurricane Forecast

Hurricane watchers in the Caribbean are expressing serious concern over what many consider a " gloomy and worrying" forecast which has been presented by noted climatologist William Gray, for the 2005 hurricane season. Gray's forecast which has been updated since his December predictions when he pointed to 11 tropical storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes, on Friday suggests 13 named tropical storms in the Atlantic, seven of which will become hurricanes, with three turning into major storms with winds clocking speed in excess of 111 miles per hour.

Anguilla Regatta 2005

The 2005 Anguilla "Mix-Up" Regatta will be held on May 6th, 7th and 8th in Road Bay, Anguilla. This year's regatta will consist of the Around the Island race on Friday, May 6th the round the buoys race on Saturday, May 7th and Sunday features the "Mix-Up" races where the crews from the local Anguilla boats race on the yachts in the morning and the yacht crews race on the Local boats in the afternoon. Sunday's races are what make the Anguilla Regatta different from most other sailing events in the region as these races incorporate the local culture into the traditional regatta setting. The local crews love having the opportunity to sail on the yachts and the yacht crews really enjoy their experience on the local boats - two very different types of sailing. The two races on Sunday use the same course as the Saturday race.

Anyone needing more information about the 2005 Anguilla "Mix-Up" Regatta can go to our web site at www.anguillaregatta2005.com or call Peter Parles at (264) 235-8300 or Laurie Gumbs at(264) 476-7867. Fax (264) 497-8907 or e-mail regatta@anguillaregatta2005.com. All volunteers are welcome!

Don Wiss: Trip to Anguilla

Here is an interesting trip report, and it comes with an album of nice photos. Here is a sample:

I sign up for a bike. $12 a day for a full suspension bike. Not bad, though I'm not a fan of full suspensions. Since I still have my luggage I'll take it to my room and come back for the bike. The woman tells me how to go. I walk to the roundabout and hitch. In a little while a fellow picks me up. He was sent to give me a ride by the woman that rented me the bike.

I check into Casa Nadine. My $20 room is pretty basic. But it does have a private bath (and hot water I later find out!).

I hitch back to get the bike. I still have a couple hours before it gets dark. So I bike out to Crocus Bay. I find Roy's. On Friday nights it has a popular happy hour.

Visitor Update on Coco Plums

Paul Lowerre writes:

I wanted to give a shout-out to all the wonderful folks at the newly re-opened COCO PLUMS restaurant on Meads Bay, just about halfway between Malliouhana and Frangipani. Coco Plums has a world-class setting, with a lovely, open-sided terrace dining room and tables out under the palms overlooking the beach. Nellica and Ricardo, the proprietors, have combined a beautiful, candlelit ambience with a first rate kitchen and dining room crew to assure their guests of a memorable outing. Jerome Vanterpool, an accomplished and decorated Anguillan chef, executes great classics with his special flair. I had an outstanding Rack of Lamb with "Minty" Sauce which was out-of-this-world. Kurt heads the service team with a welcoming warmth and crisp professionalism; with his smile and laugh, he could be Mayor of The Valley! Jamal mans the bar and turns out great drinks with style and charm. It's a really nice place to spend an evening (or afternoon).

Jerome says Coco Plums will focus on fresh ingredients, consistency and total guest satisfaction. I say he's a man of his word, and I hope everyone stops in to say hello.
